A Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) from Northern California has been deployed to the Schneider Regional Medical Center (SRMC) on St. Thomas to aid ER hospital staff in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. The team has made great sacrifices to assist the Virgin Islands, with many taking pay cuts to execute this mission. They work 12 hour shifts and return to their “camp” to sleep, which currently consists of sleeping bags in the Gucci store at Yacht Haven Grande. They are fed Meals Ready to Eat (MREs) and boxed water.
The team will remain on St. Thomas in these conditions until the SRMC hospital staff is able to resume full patient care. My husband, who is an ER nurse at SRMC, reports that DMAT personnel are incredibly competent, professional, and diligent. The island is incredibly fortunate to have their assistance, and he feels lucky to work side-by-side with them.
